If we apply what Christ is giving us, you don't know what you need, but your father does. Your father knows what you need. So as a point of application for the entire prayer so far, he says the greatest thing that you need is that my name be glorified in your life. Now that's really hard because we naturally don't want to glorify God.
The second thing he says is that you want to pray for God's kingdom to come. Later in chapter six, he says, seek first the kingdom of God. I don't know about you, but that is messing with my life. I don't examine my life and think, “Hmm. You know what, Jon, you're doing a great job seeking first the kingdom of God.” I seek first my flesh often. I seek first the desire to fulfill my fleshly desires.
And then I wonder why I'm so unhappy and angry. And I, as James says, I fight with people around me because my passion is not aligning with his. This is why the Psalmist says, delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. So Jesus says you need to put first my kingdom. So pray that the kingdom of God would be first in your life.
Pray to see the fulfillment of the kingdom, where all the nations of the world will hear the gospel. What other purpose do you have in your life? To live long? Use me however you want. And if the purpose of my life is to live long and old, and that will bring the gospel to the lost, and they will be found, then Lord, let me live no longer than 120, please.
But you see, our purposes are so skewed. And so he says, you need to constantly be, daily be washing yourself with the purpose of your life, which is to glorify God and to be a part of his kingdom and to do his will. Lord, he says, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. And then to accomplish these things in me, Lord, give me daily bread.
Everything I need, you will provide. And I trust that. And Lord, when my eyes are off of the kingdom, and I'm not glorifying you, and I'm not doing your will, and I'm definitely not depending on your grace, forgive my debt. Do you see that? It's so great. It's so wonderful. Prayer brings freedom. We are so entangled in this world, and we're so entangled in our flesh, and we're so entangled with sin. And the father says, I can liberate you from that. By simply asking me, you will be free.
It is supernaturally - if I can use the colloquial - cool. It's so wonderful to think that my slavery yesterday can be liberated today. And I have the guarantee it'll be liberated tomorrow.
